RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
