Administration Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but excluding the start of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
